Long paper cores require organized storage, consistent support, and equipment designed around their dimensions. A purpose-built core cart, also called a core buggy, helps paper manufacturers stage and move these materials while keeping them aligned and accessible.
Plymouth Industries designed and fabricated a custom steel core cart for a paper manufacturing facility. Built around the customer’s core dimensions and handling requirements, this project combines high-density storage with reinforced construction and a dedicated wheel arrangement.
Paper Core Storage Built Around the Product
Standard material handling carts do not always accommodate long cores or the quantities needed in a mill. Cart dimensions, support surfaces, and containment features must work together to make the available space useful.
Organizing cores in a dedicated buggy gives the facility a defined location for staging materials between handling steps. It also supports a more consistent approach to core storage than relying on improvised arrangements.
Reinforced Steel Construction for Industrial Use
The core buggy features welded carbon steel construction with an open-top configuration. A 12-gauge steel deck provides a continuous support surface, while reinforced side structures help contain the cores.
Key design features include:
- Tube gussets at the base to support core alignment and reinforce the side walls.
- A welded 3/8-inch flat-stock back stop at the fixed-wheel end.
- Center supports incorporated into the cart structure.
- Two push handles positioned for cart handling.
- An open-top design that preserves access from above.
Together, these features create a paper core handling cart built around the customer’s actual materials and operating requirements.

Wheels and Casters Selected for the Application
A custom industrial cart needs a wheel arrangement suited to its size and intended movement.
For this project, Plymouth Industries specified two 8-inch-diameter swivel casters and four 10-inch-diameter fixed phenolic wheels. The combination provides steering through the swivel casters and directional tracking through the fixed wheels.
Wheel selection is an important part of designing a core buggy. Cart weight, loaded weight, floor conditions, turning space, and travel routes all influence the appropriate configuration. Addressing those requirements during design helps the finished equipment fit the facility’s workflow.
A Custom Core Buggy for Your Facility
Paper core dimensions and handling methods vary between operations. A cart that fits one production area may require different dimensions, support features, or wheels for another.
Plymouth Industries designs custom paper core and tube carts around those differences. This project demonstrates how core quantity, product length, frame reinforcement, and mobility can be addressed in one coordinated design.
