Keeping instrument trays organized and ready to move requires a cart designed around the equipment it carries. Plymouth Industries designed and fabricated a custom instrument tray cart for a medical technology manufacturer, combining multi-shelf storage, enclosed access, and practical handling features in one mobile unit.
Built to accommodate 30 instrument trays across three shelves, this cart provides a dedicated solution for organizing and transporting equipment used in medical education.
Instrument Tray Storage Built Around the Application
A standard shelf cart may provide storage space, but tray dimensions, access requirements, and transportation needs determine how well it works in daily use.
For this project, Plymouth Industries developed a cabinet-style instrument tray storage cart with three shelf levels and wide-opening double doors. The layout allows personnel to access trays directly while keeping multiple sets together in a single mobile storage unit.
Magnetic Dividers for Flexible Tray Organization
The project also included custom shelf dividers to help separate instrument trays and maintain an organized storage arrangement.
Each divider features:
- 11-gauge bent sheet metal construction for a durable partition.
- Three rare earth magnets to hold the divider in place on the shelf.
- An approximately 20-by-10-inch divider panel with a 2-inch mounting flange.
Magnetic attachment allows the dividers to be repositioned without permanent shelf fasteners. This gives personnel flexibility when arranging tray groups or adapting shelf space to different storage needs.
Mobility and Positioning Features for Daily Handling
An instrument transport cart needs to support movement between storage and use locations. This design incorporates several features to make that handling more practical:
- 6-inch-diameter, 2-inch-wide casters for rolling movement.
- A floor lock to help hold the cart in position during loading and unloading.
- Integrated 8-by-3-inch fork pockets for forklift handling when required.
- Three storage shelves arranged to accommodate 30 instrument trays.
Together, these features support both manual movement and equipment-assisted handling. Personnel can move the cart as a complete storage unit, helping reduce the need to transfer trays between separate shelves and transport carts.
Cabinet-Style Access with Custom Panel Options
The cart features diamond-pattern openings in its doors and side panels. This configuration allows personnel to view shelf contents through the panels while the doors are closed. Double doors open to expose the shelf area for loading and retrieval.
Put Custom Instrument Tray Storage to Work
Effective material handling starts with equipment that fits the task. This custom instrument tray cart brings organized storage, flexible dividers, accessible shelving, and multiple handling options together in a design built around the customer’s trays.
